Astech Irie Co., Ltd. was established in 1901 (Meiji 34) when the government-operated Yawata Steel Works began operations in Yawata Village, Fukuoka Prefecture, marking the first step in establishing Japan's steel industry. About ten years later, in 1910 (Meiji 43), the company started its operations as a contractor for the Yawata Steel Works.
